Today, I’d like to discuss hit & run accidents here in Florida. A lot of times people are hit while driving their vehicle, the other car takes off, they can’t find that vehicle, they may be injured, and fear they cannot make a claim. Well, first of all, Florida is a no-fault state so you do have PIP insurance which will pay for the first $10,000 of your medical bills. Sometimes there is additional coverage on your policy which is called Medical Payments Coverage which will pay for more medical coverage for your injuries as well. There is also optional coverage called Uninsured or Underinsured motorist coverage. So, if you get hit by a car, it takes off, and you have that coverage on your policy then you can still make a claim against your own policy for whatever damage you sustained because of the hit & run vehicle. Now, this also comes into play if the other vehicle isn’t a hit & run and they have limited insurance, you can go after your underinsured motorist coverage for any additional damages you may have sustained. So, here in Florida just because you are involved in an accident and the car that hit you isn’t available that doesn’t mean that you do not have a claim, definitely check your policy and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call here at Zweben Law Group.
